The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards did more than generate headlines — they also delivered the show’s strongest television audience in more than a decade.

Paramount reported 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV, including the MTV encore, a 51% increase from the 2025 event. CBS accounted for 7.61 million viewers, while MTV’s simulcast drew 686,000 and the encore another 142,000.

The opening portion of the telecast, featuring Madonna’s first VMA performance in 23 years with appearances from Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, peaked above 15 million viewers across CBS and MTV. Paramount also reported 31.1 million social interactions and 159 million video views tied to the show.

The numbers are a reminder that award shows can still create mass audiences when distribution, live-event programming and artist moments line up. The CBS simulcast gave the VMAs a broadcast platform that MTV alone no longer provides.

Amplifier Take: The ratings story may be as important as the trophies. The VMAs showed that legacy music brands can still matter when they are treated as major live events rather than niche cable programming.
