Jhené Aiko has reached a career milestone more than a decade after first entering the Billboard 200. Her new album Westside Whimsy debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated September 26, giving Aiko the first Billboard 200 chart-topper of her career.
Billboard reported that the album earned 74,000 equivalent album units in the United States during the tracking week ending September 17, according to Luminate. The result also makes Westside Whimsy the first R&B album by a woman to top the Billboard 200 in 2026.
A long climb to No. 1
Aiko first reached the Billboard 200’s Top 10 with Sail Out in 2013. Her 2020 album Chilombo peaked at No. 2, but the top position had remained out of reach until now.
Westside Whimsy, released September 11, arrived with little lead time after being announced just days earlier. The 20-track project includes appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Larry June, Tyga and Ohma, while keeping Aiko’s atmospheric R&B identity at the center.
Streaming still drives the album chart
The debut is another example of how a modern No. 1 album can be built around streaming consumption rather than blockbuster physical sales. The project’s opening-week performance reflects the strength of Aiko’s existing audience and the pent-up interest surrounding her first full-length studio release since Chilombo.
Amplifier Take: The significance is less about a sudden breakthrough than a long-established artist finally crossing a chart threshold. Aiko has spent more than a decade building a distinctive lane in contemporary R&B, and Westside Whimsy turns that sustained audience into her first No. 1 album.
