Nirvana received the 2026 MTV Video Vanguard Award without trying to turn the honor into a reunion performance.
Public Enemy’s Chuck D presented the award to Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear. The surviving members accepted on behalf of the band, but did not perform.
Novoselic used the moment to credit Kurt Cobain’s creative vision for the videos that helped define Nirvana’s place in MTV history. The band’s visual identity — especially the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” era — became inseparable from the alternative-rock explosion of the early 1990s.
The restraint fit the occasion. Rather than recreating a version of Nirvana without Cobain, the group let the archive, the videos and the influence carry the weight of the tribute.
Amplifier Take: For a band whose mythology is so closely tied to authenticity, not forcing a performance may have been the most appropriate choice. The award recognized what Nirvana already put on film — and why those images still matter.
